Who is the Fight Inequality Alliance?

The Fight Inequality Alliance comprises leading national and international social movements, NGOs, women’s rights groups and trade unions across the world. We are deeply concerned about the impact of current shocking levels of inequality, and inspired by people’s collective struggles to build a more equal, more sustainable world. Rising inequality is hurting us all - holding up poverty reduction, harming the environment, hurting the economy, destabilising society, and undermining democracy.

Experts and international institutions now recognise that inequality must be tackled. And every government has pledged to reduce inequality within and between countries. But in practice not much progress is happening and in many countries we are even going backwards. When it comes to action they are still reaching for the same old failed solutions.

Only when people join together from the grassroots up, mobilising and organising to build power and demand accountability and greater equality, will things change. Together we are helping to build up people’s power and connect across organisations and borders to enable a more equal world. We are helping to build up national coalitions of the Fight Inequality Alliance to bring change at country level and taking action regionally and internationally to fight the structural causes of inequality.

The Alliance is going through an exciting period of growth from its beginnings in 2017. The Digital Engagement Lead will join a small global secretariat that coordinates the work of the Alliance. They will report to the Global Convenor, leading the digital engagement efforts at international level, and supporting national alliances in a range of ways as we grow our impact further over the coming years.

Role Overview:

Leads, grows and manages the digital engagement for the Fight Inequality Alliance. Focuses on growing and driving our digital support base and engagement through social media platforms and email. Brings the voices of grassroots activists to the fore. Builds the connections and credibility of the alliance with influencers, media and allies. Serves as a key representative and planner for the global alliance. Leads with drive and inspiration and with humility and collaboration. 


Key responsibilities:

Provide visionary, strategic leadership to Fight Inequality Alliance’s digital engagement, and translate that vision into specific strategies and concrete actions to achieve targets, contribute to change objectives and to grow organisational membership, engagement and profile.

Deliver powerful own-produced content and social media - both directly and by enabling national alliances. 

In collaboration with other team members, develop and lead innovative digital campaigns which move members and supporters through engagement to sustained participation and action.

Act as a key change agent, responsible for translating a strategic change agenda into plans and operational delivery. Oversee project teams composed of networks of people across geography, theme and functions. 

Running FIA-owned channels in order to oversee creation, maintenance, and growth of FIA social media engagement including Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and others; blogs, podcasts

Mobilise capacity in support of the Alliance and make best possible use of member expertise and potential.  

Advise and support national alliances in building their digital engagement strategy.

Capture lessons and best practices for wider sharing and to inform planning. Coordinate media and social media monitoring and reporting; including organising reflection and learning activities. 

Ensure effective monitoring of social media and email progress using web analytic tools

Incorporate optimisation strategies, analyse data, and research the best ways to increase traffic.

Ensure financial performance of the team including the delivery of agreed targets. Draw up budget, monitor, forecast and report on the budget, including justifying variances. 

Be an active part of planning and other regular staff meetings of the secretariat team, and participate in training and learning activities organised. 

Manage performance and deliverables of vendors/ consultants/ freelancers/ contractors.

From time to time carry out any other duties that are within the scope of the job, and as reasonably required by the Line Manager.

Strong knowledge of digital communications and/or marketing, including social media strategy development and implementation, audience analysis, digital content planning and creation/management of content calendars, SEO, PPC and email marketing initiatives and best practices

Demonstrate capacity in developing, leading and implementing innovative and effective digital campaigns that move supporters / members through engagement to sustained activism

Excellent project management skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse groups and contexts to create and implement coherent social media strategies

Extensive social media management experience

Extensive experience developing social media content, strategies, and proven ability to build social media communities.

Ability to develop a clear and coherent voice for each social media platform

Experience of measuring the success of social media campaigns and adjusting course for maximum engagement and effectiveness. 

Leadership experience in a decentralised context and multiple accountability structures. Able to thrive in an emergent and uncertain space, in a “start-up” organisation without all the systems, processes and support of a big NGO. Able to thrive in a new role from the beginning.

Substantive multi-country experience of building up organisations’ social media profile. 

Exceptional negotiation and influencing skills, with the credibility and management experience to broker agreement. Respected by key constituencies of the Alliance. 

Dynamic and empowering leader able to exert influence and drive change without line management authority or hard power, and to lead in a way that builds others’ leadership. 

Excellent analytical skills underpinned by a good understanding of inequality issues and debates, international institutions and processes. 

Strong organisational and time management skills. 

Willing to travel without creature comforts when required. 

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate complex ideas simply.

Completely fluent and strong in English. Preferably also fluent in at least one other language such as Spanish.


Lived experiences with intersecting systems of oppression, with knowledge and experience of how power and privilege play out in the contexts we organise in

Technical ability to use design software and apps

Possesses a media savvy outlook and has media contacts
