Peoples’ Alternatives Solidarity Statement on Earthquake in Morocco

We, the members of Peoples’ Alternatives, an initiative of social movements, peoples’ organisations and other civil society groups around the world, extend our deepest condolences and solidarity to all those affected by the devastating earthquake in Morocco.

Not only do disasters destroy lives and structures, but they also tear at the very fabric of communities, leaving both physical and psychological scars. As the task of relief and recovery gets underway, we call for the immediate and unconditional cancellation of Morocco’s public debt. Debt repayments already accounted for over half of the country’s GDP in 2022, and public funds are needed more urgently than ever to provide immediate relief, and to rebuild the broken lives and infrastructure people are facing. The aid now coming into the country cannot create further debts, as has been the case in many disasters.
 
Our commitment as Peoples’ Alternatives over the months ahead is to mobilise in solidarity with the people of Morocco up to and beyond the World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings from 9-15 October.

Posicionamiento de solidaridad de Alternativas Populares sobre el terremoto en Marruecos

Nosotrxs, miembrxs de Alternativas Populares, una iniciativa de movimientos sociales, organizaciones populares y otros grupos de la sociedad civil organizada en el mundo, extendemos nuestras más sinceras condolencias y solidaridad a todas aquellas personas afectadas por el devastador terremoto que azotó Marruecos. 

Los desastres no sólo destruyen vidas y edificios,sino que desgarran el tejido mismo de las comunidades, dejando cicatrices tanto físicas como psicológicas. Mientras se pone en marcha la tarea de rescate y reconstrucción, nosotrxs pedimos la condonación inmediata e incondicional de la deuda pública de Marruecos. Los repagos de la deuda ya representaban más de la mitad del PIB del país en 2022, y se necesitan todos los fondos públicos con urgencia para proporcionar ayuda inmediata y reconstruir las vidas e infraestructuras destrozadas a las que se enfrenta la población. La ayuda que llega ahora al país no puede generar más deudas, como ha ocurrido en muchas catástrofes.

Nuestro compromiso como Alternativas Populares en los próximos meses es movilizarnos en solidaridad con el pueblo de Marruecos dese Reuniones Anuales del Banco Mundial y el FMI del 9 al 15 de octubre y más allá.

نحن أعضاء "بدائل الشعب"  وهي مبادرة من حركات اجتماعية ومنظمات شعبية ومجموعات أخرى من المجتمع المدني في جميع أنحاء العالم، نتقدم بأحر التعازي والتضامن لجميع المتضررين من الزلزال المدمر في المغرب.

لا تدمر الكوارث الأرواح و المباني فقط، بل تمزق أيضًا النسيج المجتمعي، تاركةً ندوبًا جسدية ونفسية. وبينما تبدأ مهمة الإغاثة والتعافي، ندعو إلى إلغاء فوري وغير مشروط للديون العامة للمغرب. حيث أن مدفوعات الديون تمثل بالفعل أكثر من نصف الناتج المحلي الإجمالي للبلاد في عام 2022 ، وهناك حاجة إلى الأموال العامة أكثر من أي وقت مضى لتوفير الإغاثة الفورية، وإعادة بناء الحياة والبنية التحتية المكسورة التي يواجهها الناس. لا يمكن أن تخلق المساعدات التي تأتي الآن إلى البلاد ديونًا إضافية، كما كان الحال في العديد من الكوارث.

إن التزامنا كبدائل الشعب في الأشهر المقبلة هو التحرك في التضامن مع شعب المغرب حتى ما بعد اجتماعات البنك الدولي وصندوق النقد الدولي السنوية في الفترة من 9 إلى 15 أكتوبر.
