Rich countries must pay for the damage they have caused

Dear Prime Minister Truss and President Biden,

Right now the people of Pakistan have been hit by the worst floods in their country's history. These floods and other severe weather changes are directly attributable to climate change. The climate crisis has primarily been caused by your countries and polluting corporations.

Over 1500 people have been killed and 33 million people have been impacted by the floods that have left a third of Pakistan  underwater. The intensity and the frequency of the monsoons in the country have only been getting worse and as a result we are likely to see more climate catastrophes if you continue on this path.

Pakistan is responsible for 0.5% of global carbon emissions and yet they are the 8th most vulnerable country in the world to extreme weather. It is estimated it will cost around 10 billion dollars to rebuild the country after this “Monster Monsoon”.

Your countries have a responsibility due to your higher carbon emissions that are contributing to extreme weather changes like the one we have seen in Pakistan. You are directly responsible and must pay.

At the COP26 climate talks in Glasgow, the US and the UK were among several rich nations that opposed obligatory payments for their role in causing climate change. It is time that you pay for the damage you have caused and support the international loss and damage fund at COP27.
