Whilst world leaders and corporate execs convene in Davos at the World Economic Forum, during the week of 14 – 21st January 2023, people around the world are rising up as part of the Global Protest to Fight Inequality. The solutions can't come from the same elites whose wealth and power continues to reach new extremes. The solutions are coming from people on the frontlines of inequality. We are calling for a People’s Recovery Plan and for an end to spiralling inequality crippling our societies.
From Nepal to Zambia to Mexico and far beyond, communities and activists across the world will be joining forces against the billionaires and powerful elites and demanding wealth taxes and a People’s Recovery Plan.
Join the Global Protest! Take action in these powerful ways and make your voice heard.
Thousands of activists and publics across the world will observe the Global Black Band Friday on 20 January. Black Band Friday will be observed across the world to demand governments Tax The Rich. Participating activists and publics will be wearing a Black Band to show that at a time of multiple crises pushing us to the brink, we demand real change. The Black Band Friday takes place as the super rich have gathered in Davos for the World Economic Forum.
The Black Band Action will begin in Asia and sweep across the globe via Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean with actions taking place in each of the countries mobilising throughout the day. We invite everyone around the world to join in.
Dear Heads of State,
We write to you as people with one message - we need wealth taxes.
At the same time that billionaire wealth continues to spiral out of control, billions face a daily struggle to survive. Multiple crises have converged from the cost of living to unemployment, from our rights to protest to our underfunded public services, from climate change to a debt crisis.
We know that it is our actions that will create the just, equal and sustainable societies we envisage. We also know that it requires deep system change. Nowhere is this reality starker than how the wealth of the richest has spiralled during the pandemic, whilst the majority of us have struggled to survive.
The solutions are known to us and to you. Wealth taxes on the richest in all our societies would raise trillions of dollars. This is money that we need to redistribute, to build societies and economies that work for ordinary people and leave us with a livable planet.
We also need to tax wealth because of the extreme concentration of power that the hoarding of wealth drives. It is corrupting our democracies, people’s trust in politics and our social contract. We can’t live in societies where the richest make the rules.
Any talk of ‘recovery’ from Covid-19 must include taxing the rich. People across the world - every country in it - are demanding the rich pay their fair share. History paints a bleak picture of what the endgame of extremely unequal societies looks like. We do not accept that fate. For all our well-being - rich and poor alike - it’s time to confront inequality and choose to tax the rich.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, billionaires have increased their wealth by an astonishing 68%, while many people have experienced unprecedented levels of inequality. Many people have lost their livelihoods, and many more have not had access to life-saving vaccines. Others have seen austerity budgeting mean they go without basic social services.
Across the world activists on the frontlines of inequality are taking a stand and saying this greed of the wealthy elite cannot go on any longer. It's Time to #TaxTheRich.

Davos is a Swiss ski resort where the World Economic Forum’s annual meetings are held. During Davos, the top 1% do deals and discuss issues that affect everyone. The world's political and economic elite gather to tackle global issues such as poverty and inequality despite being part of the problem/biggest beneficiaries of such problems.
“Davos is a parade of rich people feigning concern for the poor while protecting their own interests. They continue to perpetuate the neoliberal system that enriches them while people and the planet are pushed to breaking point.” Jenny Ricks, Global Convener, Fight Inequality Alliance
We are at an extreme point in history where billionaire wealth is spiraling out of control, while billions face a daily struggle to survive. Multiple crises have converged from vaccine inequality to unemployment, from our rights to protest to our underfunded public services, from climate change to a debt crisis. Inequality is not just about income or wealth; it is about power. Runaway inequality has been caused by too much power in the hands of powerful corporations. It has taken over our politics. Without action to rapidly reduce inequality, we will never be able to achieve a world for the many, not the few. Whilst they meet, we call out the elites in Davos who exploit us and the governments who are failing us. The solutions to inequality cannot come from them, they must come from people on the frontlines of the inequality crisis.
We believe in a world where nobody is rich or powerful enough to be immune from the rules. Powerful elites and corporations can no longer be allowed to rig the system in their favor. To achieve this, we loudly challenge the concentration of power in the hands of an elite few.
We want governments to tax the rich and for People’s Recovery Plans to Covid-19. Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, billionaires have increased their wealth by an astonishing 68%, while many people have experienced unprecedented levels of inequality. Many people have lost their livelihoods, and many more have not had access to life-saving vaccines. Others have seen austerity budgeting which has meant that they go without basic social services.
Across the world activists on the frontlines of inequality are taking a stand and saying this greed of the wealthy elite cannot go on any longer. It's Time to #TaxTheRich to fund a more just and equitable future for all.
